Quietly Sculptural
Sourced in the South of France, this sculptural ceramic piece was created in Vallauris – an area long associated with a more expressive, tactile approach to pottery in the mid-20th century.
Its surface carries a richly mottled glaze, where deep earthen browns meet soft, chalky ivory in a finish that feels almost volcanic – organic, irregular, and quietly dramatic. The form itself is both functional and sculptural – four notched rests encircle a central well, accompanied by its original striker, once used for lighting matches in a ritual that now feels distant and slow.
There is a certain beauty in objects that have outlived their original purpose. What was once utilitarian now reads as something entirely different – textural, grounded, and deeply atmospheric.
Styled today, it rests effortlessly on a stack of linen-bound books, layered into a coffee table vignette, or placed on stone or marble where its tonal contrast and texture can fully emerge. It pairs naturally with wood, aged brass, and other earthy ceramics – adding quiet depth and a sense of collected intention to a space.
