A Vessel from the Countryside

Sourced in the South of France, this antique terracotta flask was shaped for carrying water or wine through the daily rhythms of rural life. Its broad, flattened body, short neck, and compact loop handle give the practical form an unexpectedly sculptural presence.

Warm clay tones move across the surface beneath areas of partial glaze, with subtle throwing rings, tonal variation, and irregular markings left by making, firing, and use. Near the handle, a small filled opening may once have accommodated a carrying cord, preserving another quiet trace of the flask’s original function.

Rested on a shelf, console, or tabletop, the flask brings a grounded, elemental quality to a room. Its low profile works especially well among books, wooden boards, and other collected earthenware — or simply displayed on its own.
