A Study in Earth and Amber
Originating from the Puisaye region of France, this 19th-century stoneware oil jug was made for storing and pouring liquids within the home. Its substantial ovoid body rises into a short neck and softly formed pouring lip, finished with a compact loop handle.
The glaze moves between honeyed ochre, amber brown, muted olive, and pale ash tones. A pronounced glaze run descends from the shoulder, accompanied by areas of uneven pooling, scattered pitting, and subtle surface markings created during the firing process.
With its generous proportions and richly varied surface, the jug has a grounded, sculptural quality. Display it on a low table, kitchen counter, or open shelving, where the warmth and movement of its glaze can be fully appreciated.
