A Vessel Meant to Be Carried
Made in France during the 19th century, this antique stoneware oil jug has a generous ovoid body, narrow opening, and a series of applied handles that speak to its original utilitarian purpose.
Its timeworn glaze shifts from pale ochre and muted grey to deeper russet brown, with irregular markings and areas of pooling created during the firing process. Subtle throwing lines and variations across the surface preserve the character of the clay and the hand that shaped it.
The unusual arrangement of handles gives the jug a distinctly sculptural presence. Display it on a table, open shelving, or simply on its own, where its form and richly aged surface can be fully appreciated.
